The Romanian-American University celebrates this year 30 years since its establishment. The university was founded in 1991, with the aim of promoting the educational values of the American higher education on the background of the rich values of Romanian education.

The initiative belonged to the regretted professor Ion Smedescu PhD, Founding Rector of the Romanian-American University (1991-2008) and President of the Romanian-American Foundation for the Promotion of Education and Culture.

On March 11, 1991, the constituent assembly of the Romanian-American University took place, approving the rules of procedure that envisaged the establishment of seven schools: School of Domestic and International Business, Banking and Finance, Management-Marketing, School of Domestic and International Tourism Management, School of Computer Science for Business Management, Law School, School of Design and the School of Medicine and Public Health.

On March 28, 1991, through Decision number 364, the Ministry of Education and Science approved the establishment of the Romanian-American University.

Officially, the date of birth of the University is on April 17, 1991 when, through the Ruling no. 295/17.04.1991, Bucharest’s Sector 1 Courthouse, “based on art. 32 of the Decree number 31/1954 and art.84 and Law 21/ 1924” approved the legal personality of the Romanian-American University.

We’ve made important steps which allowed us to present a different type of educational offer on the market of educational services, by adopting a system based on two levels: bachelor and master program. I do hope that all students and members of the academia will be proud members of the Romanian-American University academic community, and that our alumni will be able to contribute, through uprightness and professional competency, to the increasing prestige of our institution, in the country and abroad”, is part of the speech of the founding rector of the university, Professor Ion Smedescu, PhD, still valid today in our minds and souls.

The week 19-23 April, 2021 is dedicated to our anniversary, of the big RAU family. We share with all those that believe in our mission and our values of education, these unique moments.

In order to offer as many interested people as possible the chance to join us, the events of the anniversary week – click here – will unfold online. We will be at a one-click distance from each other, and we will enjoy the advantages of the online system, to share joy and perspectives.

The message of the Rector

Mesajul Rectorului Universității Româno-Americane

On every anniversary in our lives, we usually look backwards, we evaluate the course of action and set the future goals.

30 years for the Romanian-American University mean 30 years of millions of hopes, beautiful memories and amazing experiences in the wonderful world of knowledge, of education and culture, of challenges and achievements; 30 years about young people, their future and ours at the same time; 30 years about people, about each of us, first of all students, then graduates, employees in the country or abroad or again here, at the University, as academic or non-academic staff, all proudly sharing our past and building what today we call a big family, a prestigious structure, incorporating education and science, but also a trusted partner, the Romanian-American University.

We started in the year 1991, with a dream project of our visionary founding rector, professor Ion Smedescu, PhD – an idea, a dream which came true through the efforts and knowledge of many professionals, through the dedication and talent of many professors and non-academic staff members, through the involvement of generations of students and alumni, through the trust of parents and grandparents and numerous other partners.

The three decades until now challenged us enormously and demanded us to continuously adapt, harmoniously develop, to be stronger and more daring, in assuming the noble role of education, of promoting academic excellence and cultivating the values of knowledge and culture.

We have grown together, and we are extremely grateful to you for that!

The balance of our first 30 years gives us hope: 7 schools, 34 accredited bachelor and master programs, taught in Romanian and English; a series of new study programs authorized or due to authorization; 2600 students; foreign students from over 40 different countries; 30 courses taught annually by international professors; over 200 full time and part time professors; over 200 partnerships with academic institutions all over the world; a sports base and a modern campus. The big RAU family grows with each generation that proudly adds every year, to the 48.000 existing alumni.

At this anniversary time, I would like to congratulate and thank for dedication and effort to all those who belonged or still are members of the academic community of the Romanian-American University – students, alumni, academic and non-academic staff – and I am sending my best thoughts to those that have been with us in building the successful projects, who support us in creating a better future for us and the following generations.

Happy anniversary, dear colleagues!

Happy anniversary RAU!

VIVAT, CRESCAT, FLOREAT!

Costel Negricea, Professor PhD.

Rector of the Romanian-American University
