Academic Debate on the Romanian Treasure in Moscow, Hosted by the Romanian-American University
The Romanian-American University (RAU) hosted the monthly meeting of the Association of Career Ambassadors and Diplomats (AADC), an organization with which the higher education institution has a cooperation agreement. The event brought together faculty members, students, and guests drawn to one of the most significant and sensitive topics in contemporary history: The Romanian Treasure in Moscow.
The keynote speaker was Ilie Schipor, a renowned researcher and specialist in the issue of the Treasure, who presented a lecture titled “The Real Situation of the Romanian Treasure in Moscow”. During his presentation, he provided a rigorously documented perspective on the circumstances under which the Treasure was transferred to Russia during World War I, as well as subsequent developments that prevented its full recovery.
Evidence from Russian Archives and Historical Clarifications
Drawing on vast professional experience and research conducted directly in Russian archives, Ilie Schipor presented findings derived from the study of original documents, many published for the first time:
- A Complex Issue: Research shows that the Treasure file extends beyond the gold reserve of the National Bank of Romania, encompassing critical patrimonial, artistic, cultural, and archival assets belonging to the Romanian state.
- The Seizure Mechanism: Participants examined how Russian authorities initiated the transfer operation, the subsequent seizure of the assets by the Bolshevik regime in 1918, and their trajectory in Moscow.
- Countering Misinformation: Documentary evidence and arguments were presented to clarify historical controversies and dismantle erroneous interpretations circulated over time in the public sphere.
Academic Dialogue and Collective Memory
The discussions highlighted both the legal and historical dimensions of the file, as well as its crucial relevance to understanding Romanian-Russian relations and collective memory. The presentation sparked an engaging dialogue with the audience, confirming the keen interest this topic continues to generate within academia and society.
Through this event, the Romanian-American University and the Association of Career Ambassadors and Diplomats (AADC) reaffirmed their joint commitment to promoting rigorous academic debate and a document-backed approach to major topics in national history and identity.
