Romanian-American University recognized as an example of Good Practices in Organized Crime Prevention at the UN Plenary in Vienna
The Center for Human Rights and Migration (CDOM) at Romanian-American University addressed the plenary session of the 13th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC COP13), organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna from 19 to 23 October 2026.
At this global event, UN Member States and international organizations discussed responses to the most significant forms of transnational organized crime. Romanian-American University’s work was recognized internationally by UNODC, which presented it as an example of good practices in using the SHERLOC platform for education, research and professional skills development. The university has demonstrated an innovative approach to turning UN resources into practical tools for learning, applied research and professional training.
The Center was represented by a delegation of students comprising Oana Elena Marcu, Miruna Elena Popescu, Alessia-Georgiana Văleanu and Cezar Albert Valentin Petrovici, coordinated by Silvia Tăbușcă. In her address, Miruna Popescu highlighted how the global SHERLOC platform, developed by UNODC, has been integrated into the university’s educational and research activities, helping prepare future specialists and strengthen the capacity of professionals involved in preventing and combating transnational organized crime.
Participation in the UNTOC plenary session reaffirms Romanian-American University’s role as a relevant contributor to international discussions on security, human rights and the fight against transnational organized crime, bringing Romanian expertise to the heart of the global dialogue under the auspices of the United Nations. In an international context marked by armed conflicts, forced migration, the exploitation of vulnerable people and the rise of technology-facilitated crime, expertise developed in Romania is increasingly recognized and valued in major international forums.
„The invitation extended to the Center by UNODC recognizes the contribution that Romanian academia makes to implementing international standards for preventing and combating organized crime through education, research and professional training. The fact that CDOM’s experience was presented by UNODC representatives as an example of good practices demonstrates that the academic expertise developed at our university can contribute to global efforts to combat organized crime,”, said Silvia Tăbușcă, Director of CDOM and UNODC Individual Expert in Romania.
