FALL SCHOOL 2024: CYBER-CRIME & CYBER-SECURITY (3CS)
The Romanian-American University, through its research centers – Center for Human Rights and Migration, Center for Research in AI and Computational Science and Machine Intelligence Center, organizes the 2024 edition of the International School on CYBER-CRIME & CYBER-SECURITY (3CS).
The International School will take place at the Romanian-American University between 21st – 29th of September 2024.
The Research Excellence Against Child Trafficking (REACT) Initiative, established within the Center for Human Rights and Migration (CDOM), with the support of the Netherlands National Police, organizes this year’s fall school focused on artificial intelligence and fighting online human trafficking, a global crisis increasingly facilitated by cyber-criminals exploiting digital platforms and AI technologies.
To this aim, CDOM partnered with The Center for Research in AI (CRAI) and the Computational Science and Machine Intelligence Center (CSMI) within the Romanian-American University to create an interdisciplinary short, blended, intensive programme (BIP) designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of critical issues at the intersection of law, technology, human rights, and artificial intelligence.
In the digital age, individual rights and freedoms extend online, necessitating global protection. Cybercrime, a growing threat to democracy and society, encompasses various online offences that exploit digital technology for malicious purposes. Among these crimes, online human trafficking is a grave concern, intersecting with online fraud, forgery, and illegal content.
Traffickers exploit digital platforms, using social media, job portals, and encrypted messaging services to recruit and exploit victims. They pose as legitimate employers, offering fake job opportunities to lure individuals into exploitative situations. The sale of sexually explicit content involving trafficked individuals is rampant on the dark web, where anonymity and cryptocurrencies complicate law enforcement efforts.
Collaboration between law enforcement, financial institutions, and cybersecurity experts is crucial to combat these challenges. Advanced investigative techniques, such as AI-driven data analysis and covert surveillance tools, are employed to identify and disrupt trafficking networks. However, this raises ethical concerns about privacy and constitutional rights, highlighting the need to balance technological advancements with safeguarding fundamental freedoms.
KEY FOCUS AREAS:
- Human Trafficking – Understand the complexities and nuances of human trafficking, including its root causes, current trends, and the impact on victims and societies.
- Artificial Intelligence & Computational Social Sciences – Explore how AI can detect, prevent, and respond to human trafficking. Learn about potential applications and use cases for AI, machine learning algorithms, and data science in combating online human trafficking and Cybercrime.
- Technological Innovation & Cybercrime – Explore how regulation and legislation are mixing with technological innovation to counteract online human trafficking and Cybercrime effectively.
